Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
