Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

On the surface, this work may look closer to a challenging university challenge than the latest popular music album by a musician whose last single featured an international pop icon. Split across 4 separate sections and performed in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, frequently via the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a long list of contributors. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars look quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That this album succeeds in avoid overly academic posturing is almost miraculous, and full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first project to blend historical sounds and the present, the ambitions are far higher here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its tornado. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly on the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four minutes. Then, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in like cartoonish impact. The song immediately segues to the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely quite understand—nor wish to predict—where it will go next."

Nearly each track finishes in a totally different point from where it started. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act of the album is navigating the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of key markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung entirely in English swells around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins skyward. This feat gets repeated on another powerful ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a lavish banquet where the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day musical from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
