Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
